Display Energy Certificates - DEC

From 9 July 2015 all public buildings in England, Wales and Ireland with a total useful floor area greater than 250 meter square that are occupied in whole or part by public authorities and frequently visited by the public are obligated to have valid Display Energy Certificatea and Advisory Reports.

The Display Energy Certificate must be displayed in a prominent place which is clearly visible to the public, and is required to raise awareness of energy use and inform how energy efficient a public building is.

From September 2106 in Scotland, Display Energy Certificates can be used to defer having to implement the new Section 63 Action Plans.

What are Display Energy Certificates?

Display Energy Certificates provide a standard and credible mothodology to calculate a building or part of a buildings energy performance on an annual basis through an operational rating.

The operational rating is based on the annual carbon emissions per unit floor area, compared with a value that would be considered typical for a similar type of building.

It provides an energy rating from A-G and is based on the performance potential of the building fabric and its heating, ventilation, cooling, lighting and other services.

The Display Energy Certificate comes with an Advisory Report (AR) with recommendations to show how the energy efficiency of a building can be improved.

How ofter must Display Energy Certificates and Advisory Reports be renewed?

Buildings or parts of buildings with a useful floor area of more than 1,000 meter square need to renew it every 12 months and their Advisory Reports are valid for seven years.

Buildings or parts of buildings with a useful floor area of between 500 and 1,000 meter square need to renew their Display Energy Certificates and Advisory Reports every ten years.
